How to use our Online Violin Tuner?

To effectively tune your violin using OnlineTuner.org's Online Violin Tuner, follow these simple steps:

  1. Ensure that you are in a quiet environment to enable precise tuning. Also, position yourself and your instrument close to the device from which you're accessing our Online Violin Tuner. The best way to project the sound of your violin to a desired point in space is to position yourself so that the right side of the violin faces the point.
  2. Once you've accessed the tuner, click the "Start Tuner" button, and allow the website to access your computer or device's internal microphone.
  3. With the Online Violin Tuner activated, bow each string on your violin one at a time. Observe the tuner's digital display; it will show the closest note to the one you're playing and provide guidance on whether the string needs to be tightened ("tune up") or loosened ("tune down") to achieve the correct violin tuning.
  4. Adjust the tuning pegs or the tuning screw adjusters of your violin as needed, and retest each string until the tuner confirms that every string of your violin is perfectly in tune.

Our Online Violin Tuner combines high-precision technology and user-friendly interface features to make your violin tuning experience straightforward and accurate.

How do I tune up/down a violin string?

Following the indications provided by our Online Violin Tuner involves adjusting your violin's tuning pegs to achieve the correct violin tuning. To adjust a string either up or down to attain the correct tuning, identify the peg or the adjustment screw associated with the string you wish to tune. The tuning pegs are the wooden pegs located on the head of your violin - see picture above. The adjustement fine-tuning screws are located on the tail piece of your violin Most violins usually have one on the highest string to prevent it from snapping.

Grasp the peg firmly - or the fine-tuning screw gently - and turn it while bowing the corresponding string to adjust its pitch. If our Online Violin Tuner indicates that the string needs to be tuned up to a higher pitch, turn the peg counterclockwise to tighten it. If you're using a fine-tuning screw, turn it clockwise. Conversely, if the string must be lowered in pitch, turn the peg clockwise - or the fine-tuning screw counterclockwise to loosen the string. Remember to make these adjustments gradually and cautiously to avoid overshooting the desired note and potentially damaging your strings. Always use a reliable tuner, like our Online Violin Tuner on OnlineTuner.org, to ensure precise tuning before moving on to the next string.

What are the frequencies of the 4 strings on a standard violin?

On a standard four-string violin, the strings are tuned as follows (for A4=440 Hz):

G3 - 4th string (lowest): This is the thickest string and plays the lowest note on a standard violin. In standard tuning, it's tuned to G3, and its frequency is approximately 195.55 Hz.

D4 - 3rd string: This string is tuned to D4, and its frequency is approximately 293.33 Hz.

A4 - 2nd string: This string is tuned to A4, and its frequency is approximately 440 Hz. It is generally the strings that violinists tune first, befor tuning the other strings.

E5 - 1st string (highest): This is the thinnest string and plays the highest note on a standard four-string violin. In standard tuning, it's tuned to E5, and its frequency is approximately 660 Hz.

Accurately tuning your violin is essential for producing a clear and resonant sound. Our Online Violin Tuner is designed to make this process easy and efficient.

The benefits of using a dedicated online violin tuner

On a regular online instrument tuner, such as our standard online tuner, the difference in frequency between each of the twelve notes on the standard scale is calculated semi-tone by semi-tone and on an octave-by-octave basis. We compute all the octaves from the A4 (440 Hz as a base setting). We then compute all the higher A's by multiplying the immediately lower A by 2. For instance, A5 = 2 x A4 = 880Hz. We compute the lower A's by dividing the immediately higher A by 2. For instance, A3 = A4 / 2 = 220 Hz. We then assume that each of the 12 semi-tones of an octave are equally disseminated all over the octave on a logarithmic scale. We thus compute each semi-tone multiplying or dividing the precedent semi-tone by 2 powered to 1/12. For instance, A#4 = A4 x 21/12 and G#4 = A4 / 21/12. This method is called the 12 equal temperament musical system.

However, the strings of a violin are perfect fifths. A perfect fifth should normally have a frequency ratio of 3/2. It is the most consonant interval. Tuning a violin using the 12 equal temperament system might result in hearing a slight friction in the sound. This is why our Online Violin Tuner is specifically set to a 3/2 interval between each string. We provide you with the most accurate online violin tuner.

Tuning your violin by ear

As a result of the interval between the strings of a violin - perfect fifths -, it is fairly easy to tune your violin by ear:

  1. To do that, start with tuning the A4 string of your violin using our Online Violin Tuner. This string will be your reference.
  2. Then, bow the strings two-by-two, starting with the pair A4-E5 and the pair D4-A4 and adjust the pegs or the fine-tuning screws of the E5 and D4 strings. You can help yourself with our Online Violin Tuner at first, but with a little bit of training, you should be able to identify when D4 and E5 make a perfect fifth with A4.
  3. Once the D4 string is tuned, you can use it to find a perfect fifth with the G3 string.

Understanding our Online Violin Tuner's settings

The Online Violin Tuner provided by OnlineTuner.org is designed to cater to both novice and experienced musicians when tuning their violins. It offers an accurate, robust, and versatile tuning experience that can be customized to meet your specific needs. Access each of these settings directly on our Online Violin Tuner or click on ā€œAdvanced settingsā€ for more options.

Set the A4 value of our Online Violin Tuner

One of the most crucial settings when using our Online Violin Tuner is the adjustable frequency of the A4 note. This setting serves as the foundational pitch for all other notes. While the default is often set to the international standard of A=440 Hz, some musicians or orchestras prefer alternative frequencies such as A=432 Hz or A=442 Hz. Adjusting this foundational pitch makes our Online Violin Tuner flexible enough to accommodate musicians who play in various tuning systems, whether they be historical temperaments or modern experimental tunings.

Set the sensitivity of our Online Violin Tuner

Another pivotal feature of our Online Violin Tuner is the sensitivity setting, which can be altered to suit the specific environment or instrument in use. You can adjut the sensitivity of our Online Violin Tuner through the algorithm's probability threshold. By adjusting this, users can control how many notes the tuner will detect and how accurately it will do so. For musicians who require ultra-precise tuning, or that are using specific sound effects on their violin, this setting can be extremely helpful.

Using our Online Violin Tuner in challenging environments

Additionally, the noise gate setting of our Online Violin Tuner is beneficial for tuning in acoustically challenging environments. Whether you're in a room with background noise or in a rehearsal space with other musicians, the noise gate allows you to set a threshold below which sounds will be ignored by our Online Violin Tuner, ensuring that only your violin's sound is picked up and analyzed, enhancing the tuner's accuracy.

Meter tuner vs. Slider tuner

Finally, you can choose between our Meter tuner and Slider tuner based on your preference when tuning your violin. Switch between them by clicking on the "Display the slider tuner" switch of our Online Violin Tuner.
