How to Tune a Ukulele by Ear: A Step-by-Step Guide

Learning to tune your ukulele by ear is one of the most useful skills a player can develop. It sharpens your musical ear, it keeps your instrument sounding right when no tuner is within reach, and on a ukulele in particular it saves you constantly — nylon strings drift out of tune far faster than steel ones. In this guide we cover two reliable methods for tuning a ukulele in standard tuning (G4, C4, E4, A4): the fretted-note technique and natural harmonics. We also look at what changes on a low-G instrument, because that single string alters the whole approach.

Standard Ukulele Tuning (G4, C4, E4, A4)

The standard ukulele tuning

In standard ukulele tuning for A4 = 440Hz, the four strings are set to the following notes and frequencies:

4th string: G4 (392.00 Hz)

3rd string: C4 (261.63 Hz)

2nd string: E4 (329.63 Hz)

1st string: A4 (440.00 Hz)

Read those frequencies again and something odd stands out. The 4th string — the one closest to your face, where a guitar or bass would put its lowest note — is tuned to G4, which is higher in pitch than both the 3rd string (C4) and the 2nd string (E4). The lowest note on a standard ukulele is the 3rd string, sitting in the middle of the instrument.

This is called reentrant tuning, and it is the source of the ukulele’s bright, chiming sound, because strummed chords do not run neatly from low to high. It is also the reason for the old mnemonic: strum the open strings from 4th to 1st and you get the melody of “My dog has fleas.” Sing that phrase and you are singing G–C–E–A.

Why Tuning a Ukulele by Ear Is Different

If you already tune a guitar or bass by ear, set those habits aside for a moment. Two things do not carry over.

You cannot simply work from thickest to thinnest. On a bass, each string is a perfect fourth above the one before it, so you tune the lowest string and walk upward in a single direction. The reentrant 4th string breaks that chain on a ukulele. The most reliable starting point is the 3rd (C) string — the actual lowest note — and the G string is best left until last.

The intervals are not all the same. A bass is tuned in uniform fourths, which is why the 5th fret works everywhere on it. A ukulele is not:

  • 3rd (C) to 2nd (E) is a major third — four semitones, so the 4th fret.
  • 2nd (E) to 1st (A) is a perfect fourth — five semitones, so the 5th fret.
  • 3rd (C) to 4th (G) is a perfect fifth — seven semitones, so the 7th fret.

Memorising “fifth fret” and applying it across the instrument will leave you badly out of tune. Each pairing has its own fret, and the method below uses the right one each time.

Method 1: The Fretted-Note Technique

This is the most dependable way to tune a ukulele by ear. You establish one string against a reference pitch, then use a fretted note on each tuned string to set the next one. Play the fretted note and the open string together and listen for a slow wavering “beat” between them — as the two pitches converge, the wavering slows down and disappears.

Step 1: Tune the 3rd (C) string 
Start with C4 (261.63 Hz), using a reference pitch from an electronic tuner or a tuning app such as OnlineTuner.org’s Ukulele Tuner. This is your foundation — everything else is measured against it, so take the time to get it exactly right.

Step 2: Tune the 2nd (E) string 
Press down at the 4th fret of the 3rd (C) string. The note you hear is E4. Now play the open 2nd (E) string and turn its peg until the open string matches the fretted note. Note the fret carefully: this is a major third, not a fourth, so it is the 4th fret rather than the 5th.

Step 3: Tune the 1st (A) string 
Press down at the 5th fret of the 2nd (E) string to produce A4. Play the open 1st (A) string and adjust until the two pitches are identical. This is the one place on the ukulele where the familiar 5th-fret rule does apply.

Step 4: Tune the 4th (G) string 
Leave the reentrant string until last, and take it from a string you have already tuned. The easiest reference is the 3rd fret of the 2nd (E) string, which gives you G4. Play it against the open 4th (G) string and match them. If you prefer to work from your foundation string instead, the 7th fret of the 3rd (C) string produces the same G4 — either route is fine, and checking both is a good way to confirm the rest of your tuning is honest.

Method 2: Harmonics and Octave Checks

Natural harmonics give a clear, bell-like tone with no finger pressure to pull the note sharp, which makes small differences in pitch much easier to hear. To produce one, rest a fingertip lightly on the string directly above the fret wire, pluck, and lift your finger away immediately.

Be aware that harmonics are less generous on a ukulele than on a bass. The short scale and low string tension make them quieter and shorter-lived, so work close to the instrument in a quiet room. More importantly, the uneven intervals mean the 5th-and-7th-fret pairing only lines up in one place.

Step 1: Tune the 3rd (C) string 
As before, set C4 against a reference pitch first.

Step 2: Check the 1st (A) string against the 2nd (E) string 
This is the perfect fourth, so the classic pairing works. Sound the harmonic at the 5th fret of the 2nd (E) string and the harmonic at the 7th fret of the 1st (A) string. Both ring at E6. Adjust the A string until the two harmonics sit perfectly still against one another.

Step 3: Check the 4th (G) string against the 3rd (C) string 
Sound the harmonic at the 7th fret of the 3rd (C) string, which rings at G5. Compare it with the harmonic at the 12th fret of the 4th (G) string, which is one octave above the open string and also rings at G5. Tune the G string until they match.

Step 4: Set the 2nd (E) string with a fretted note 
There is no clean harmonic pairing for a major third, so the E string still has to come from the 4th fret of the C string as described in Method 1. Use harmonics where they genuinely align and do not force them elsewhere — a mismatched harmonic pair will send you further out of tune, not closer in.

The 12th-fret harmonic is worth knowing on its own account. It sounds exactly one octave above the open string, so it is an excellent way to confirm any string against itself, or against a reference note an octave away.

High-G or Low-G: What Changes

Many players fit a wound low-G string in place of the reentrant one, tuning the 4th string to G3 (196.00 Hz) instead of G4. That is a full octave lower, and it turns the ukulele into a conventional instrument that runs low to high across the strings.

If that is your setup, the tuning order becomes simpler. G3 sits a perfect fourth below C4, so you can work upward from the 4th string exactly as you would on a guitar: fret the 5th fret of the low-G string to sound C4 and tune the open 3rd string to it, then continue with the 4th fret and 5th fret steps above for the E and A strings.

Everything else in this guide still applies, but do check which string you actually have before you start. Tuning a high-G string down an octave will leave it flapping uselessly against the frets, and pulling a low-G string up an octave will break it.

Tips for Accurate Ukulele Tuning

Create a quiet environment: Ukulele strings are quiet and their harmonics quieter still. A low-noise room makes the beats between two close pitches far easier to hear.

Tune gradually: Turn the pegs slowly and in small movements. Nylon strings respond with a slight delay, so it is easy to overshoot if you rush.

Note: Turning the peg clockwise will loosen the string (lowering the pitch), while turning it counter-clockwise will tighten the string (raising the pitch). Geared and friction tuners can differ, so make one small test turn and watch which way the pitch moves before committing.

Always arrive from below: If a string is sharp, drop it clearly flat and bring it back up to pitch. Approaching the note from underneath takes up slack in the peg and holds far better than easing down onto it from above.

Expect new strings to keep moving: Fresh nylon stretches for several days. A new set may need retuning three or four times in a single session, and that is normal rather than a fault with your instrument. Gently pulling each string away from the fretboard speeds the process up.

Verify with chords: Once all four strings are set, strum a C and an F chord. Individual strings can each sound acceptable while the instrument as a whole does not, and chords expose that immediately. Strumming the open strings and hearing “My dog has fleas” come out cleanly is a quick final check.

Tuning a ukulele by ear takes a little more thought than tuning a guitar, simply because the intervals refuse to fall into one convenient pattern.
